CREATE Open Call & Designathon

This initiative empowers African American communities in North Carolina to lead COVID-19 prevention efforts through crowdsourced ideas and AI-driven videos. It includes training Community-led Rapid Response Teams (CRRT) for future public health challenges, exploring the feasibility of using lay health advisors for contact tracing and case investigation.

Mission

To empower communities through innovative, community-driven solutions to enhance COVID-19 prevention, testing, and pandemic preparedness among African Americans in North Carolina.

Vision

A future where community-led initiatives and technology-driven strategies effectively address health disparities and improve pandemic response in underserved populations.

Goals

To evaluate the effectiveness of crowdsourced ideas, generative AI tools, and community-led training programs in promoting COVID-19 prevention and testing while building sustainable models for future public health challenges.

The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of crowdsourcing to generate community-driven ideas for promoting COVID-19 prevention and testing among African Americans in North Carolina. We held an open call to gather innovative ideas from community members, with the top five finalists participating in a designathon to develop their concepts into deep learning videos using generative AI tools. Next, we developed a campaign based on these ideas. The deep learning videos will be evaluated to see if they enhance COVID-19 testing promotion among African Americans. Additionally, we are developing a curriculum to train Community-led Rapid Response Teams, consisting of lay community members trained in contact tracing and case investigation. This part of the study will explore the feasibility and acceptability of a community-driven model using lay health advisors for future pandemics or viral outbreaks.
